Exercise is much more than simply staying active. Physiotherapists prescribe exercise as a targeted treatment, carefully selecting the type, intensity, volume, and frequency based on a patient’s goals and physical capabilities.

Strength Development

 

When the goal is to increase strength, exercises are typically performed with heavier loads for lower repetitions, often between 3-6 repetitions for 3-5 sets. These higher-intensity exercises challenge the nervous system and muscles to generate greater force.

For example, a patient recovering from an ACL reconstruction or aiming to return to sport may require significant strength gains to safely resume activity.

 

Muscle Growth (Hypertrophy)

If the goal is to increase muscle size, physiotherapists may prescribe moderate loads performed for approximately 6-12 repetitions across 3-5 sets. This training volume creates sufficient muscular stress to stimulate muscle growth.

Hypertrophy training is often used during rehabilitation following injury, surgery, or periods of inactivity where muscle loss has occurred.

 

Muscular Endurance

Endurance training focuses on improving a muscle’s ability to perform repeated work over time. This typically involves lighter loads and higher repetitions, often 20-25 repetitions or more for multiple sets.

Patients recovering from shoulder injuries, postural conditions, or occupational demands may require endurance-focused programs to improve fatigue resistance during daily activities.

 

Power Development

Power refers to the ability to produce force quickly. This quality is particularly important for athletes, older adults at risk of falls, and individuals returning to activities involving running, jumping, or rapid changes of direction.

Power exercises are usually performed explosively with moderate to high loads for low repetitions, commonly 2-5 repetitions across several sets. Examples may include jump training, medicine ball throws, or rapid sit-to-stand exercises.

Progressive and Individualised Care

 

An effective exercise program is never static. As the body adapts, exercises must be progressively adjusted to continue driving improvement.

Your physiotherapist will regularly modify variables such as resistance, repetitions, sets, movement complexity, speed, or exercise frequency to ensure ongoing progress while minimising the risk of aggravation or re-injury.

This progressive approach allows patients to safely rebuild capacity and confidence while moving toward their individual goals.
